Almost every Australian has immigrated from another
continent and country and if you're curious about the way people migrated in
those days and the things they had to do, then you have to visit the
immigration museum. There are 3 levels. The ground floor has a mini library
where you can get more information on family tree etc, there's a tribute garden
and a theatrette.
You have to buy tickets ($6 for full paying adults and free
for concession) to go to the 2nd and 3rd floor. The 2nd floor was laid out so
that one could go through the whole journey of a migrant coming to Australia.
This was my favourite level. You are allowed to take photos on this level. Do
the interview and the english test. Go through the ship and see the
accommodations that people lived in on their journey to Australia (sound
effects are 'interesting'...especially the ones from the toilet! lol.). Also
watch the video clip at the very end, it's pretty emotional to think of what
people went through to get here; especially since I've migrated here as well, I
feel that I've only went through a tiny percentage of hardship when compared to
earlier times, eg: I took about 14 hours by flight to get to Australia, whilst
it usually took months and in sometimes terrible conditions - rough seas etc to
get here in those days.
The 3rd floor has the east wing and the west wing with
costumes worn by Singapore women and models of ships in the other wing.
